The 69th annual Costume Institute Gala Benefit, taking place at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, theme is “Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons.” Rei Kawakubo will be the first living designer since Yves Saint Laurent in 1983 to be the sole subject of the Met’s blockbuster fashion exhibit.
This is the appropriate gala so celebrities can be creatively crazy and take fashion to the extreme, I love outrageous outfits that draw attention, but I think some things are too much even to the Met Gala. I like when they manage to incorporate the theme and still be faithful to their own style, and be elegant and look stunning.
Anyway, here are some of my favorite outfits:
The stylish couple Keri Russell & Matthew Rhys. Keri is wearing a custom shawl collar tuxedo tailcoat and a red silk charmeuse tuxedo stripe pant, she finished her look with a Lee Savage clutch. Matthew is wearing a custom black Abraham Moon wool double breasted jacket with peak satin lapel and black Abraham Moon wool traditional Welsh kilt.
Joe Jonas Met Gala debut looking really handsome, in an H&M suit.
Lily James wearing a white corseted gown by Burberry featuring a sculptural skirt in silk and cotton fil-coupé net, finished with a black silk oversized bow, and Repossi jewelry.
Rami Malek bold fashion choice, Dior Homme red wool and mohair tuxedo.
Emmy Rossum looks fierce in black and white in a Carolina Herrera pants look with a giant bow on her hip and Fred Leighton jewelry.
Future wearing H&M is everything.
This look is beautiful, Hailey Baldwin is wearing Lorraine Schwartz jewelry, Giuseppe Zanotti shoes, an Edie Parker clutch, and a Gigi Burris custom headpiece.
Selena Gomez looks so stunning, I don’t know if she really fits the theme but she looks beautiful. She is wearing Coach with Tiffany & Co. jewelry.
Kylie Jenner dress is stunning, but that bleached blonde wig destroys the look. She is wearing a Versace dress with Lorraine Schwartz jewels
I hate that I love this, it’s so Rihanna, a look you will remember! Rihanna stayed true to the theme in a Commes des Garcons look, accessorized with Rihanna Loves Chopard jewelry.
Blake Lively it’s perfect! I think she really embraced the theme and still looks absolutely stunning. She wore a custom-made Atelier Versace gown and Lorraine Schwartz jewels, Blake‘s dress featured blue feathers on the train, which matched Ryan‘s navy blue Versace tuxedo and pale blue bowtie.
And here are some of my not so favorite, to be nice, outfits:
Cara Delevingne painted her freshly shaved head silver and decorated it with crystals, matching her diamond-covered Chanel suit. I feel like she had received the invitation from last year’s Gala and she embraced last year theme.
Celine Dion makes her first appearance at the Met Gala in Versace. At first, I thought I was looking at Lady Gaga 5 years ago, I don’t like the look and I don’t think it has anything to do with Celine’s style.
Madonna is looking army “chic” in Moschino by Jeremy Scott. I really don’t get the army look, it’s weird and ugly, sorry.
Priyanka Chopra is wearing a Ralph Lauren Collection Custom Trench Coat Evening Gown and Jennifer Fisher earrings. That’s it, she’s wearing a coat, a long, simple coat.
Pharrell Williams wore a leather jacket and ripped jeans and his wife Helen Lasichanh wore an outfit that kept her arms restrained inside the dress, both are wearing Commes des Garcons outfits. So the theme is right but… leather jacket and ripped jeans so outrageous! And a dress that you can’t move your arms? Practical, not to mention it’s so ugly.
Kendall Jenner in a deep neckline and totally sheer La Perla Haute Couture dress, which also featured a high slit on the leg, Kendall wore a black thong underneath the dress and let her “cheeks peek through”. She finished her look with Christian Louboutin shoes, a Tomasini bag, Lorraine Schwartz earrings, and Ofira rings. So, brands, skin, no shame, leave everyone talking, not about the outfit but the lack of it.
Rita Ora is wearing a Marchesa custom Couture gown, she accessorized with Lorraine Schwartz diamond stud earrings worth $3 million. The dress, from the waist up is gorgeous, but from the waist down it’s a mess! That hair I can’t even talk about it.
Katy Perry in a red veiled Maison Margiela ‘Artisanal’ look designed by John Galliano, she completed her look with a red silk tulle veil, headpiece in high polished chrome and red Tabi boots. Honestly I don’t know what she’s wearing, I don’t know what’s her point, just bye!
There were many more beautiful looks, but these were the ones that caught my attention, and of course there were many more ugly looks, but these were the ones that stood out, for me, in the midst of all the craziness.
